This is going to be a stream of consciousness post.
Hamadryad: “Chicks that have wood” jokes incoming. Probably too much testosterone in the hobby for this race.
Yay. Another Wisdom-based race. Int or Cha on the back end *Yawn* Guess we don’t want our wimmin bein’ physical. Somehow, Stamina seems like something I would have considered.
Suggested classes: Druid, Warlord, Ranger, Wizard… At least they’re good at being two of those classes, I guess.
Racial power is modal. Neat idea. Pretty sure the Wilden would like some of that action. It works well on Rogues and defenders… neither of which are good fits for this race.
Lord, I wish this “four hours of eyes-open meditation” crap would go away.
Racial utility powers are decent. Most of them involve (not) getting hit, though. Wonder where they expect these characters to be standing.
Pixie: Shrink is the best kludge ever! Of course, resizing crap could have just been a cheap ritual or, you know, martial practice. Like the way this works, though.
Charisma always, Dex/Int choice. Wow, as unimpressed as I was with the Hamadryad’s class choices, that has a lot of options I like. And look, all the suggested classes make sense! *golfclap*
Is anyone else hearing “Tink got big” or is it just me?
Pixie Invisibility seems strong. So does Pixie Teleport Trick, though it makes me wonder if the people at Wizards are running out of power names.
All in all, a really solid concept.
Satyr: Hey look, it’s the male-only race and two of the three are physical… Cha+Dex/Con.
Jesus, it’s nothing but a rearranged Halfling. Wouldn’t Cha+Dex/Str have worked?
Class suggestions make sense. No surprises.
Lure of Enchantment is going to be really strong, especially on ranged classes. Must remember to check if hindering terrain includes falls.
I can already tell that Foes into Friends is going to piss me off.
Berserker: Oh look, a mixed defender/striker Essentials-built Barbarian… no, this isn’t confusing at all. I thought the point of Essentials was to simplify 4e?
I suspect that there may be a new challenger in the “best mark” category. Vengeful Guardian makes this build worth considering, as long as I am not restricted to the Essentials powers. Doesn’t look like I am. Going to have to play with this once it his the character builder.
Powers look really vanilla. Nothing really to see here. The whole point is to restrict you to boring crap until you use a primal power and switch from defender to striker. This all seems like a lot of effort for something that isn’t that special.
Bard (Skald): Skald’s Aura transfers the action cost to the recipient (better not play action-starved classes) and never gets bigger. That’s because you can take level one attack powers that do nothing but modulate the aura to provide a benefit when you hit with a basic attack… Talk about spammy play. It won’t appeal to the power gamers because basic attacks suck (even with the class feature that replaces Strength with Charisma) and it won’t appeal to the pacifists because you actually have to attack. Grats Wizards on pleasing no one.
Who the ^&%@! thought Bardic Lore was a good idea (Daily power that turns any lore check into an auto-20)? It’s either game-breaking or a complete waste.
Druid: Nature’s Growth is a bad idea. Circle of Shelter means that the terrain only hinders enemies, making it the obvious choice. Once the Druid hits 11th level and the effect grows, no one adjacent to the Druid is going to be able to shift away. That’s going to get old quickly.
Druids gain cantrips? Sexy.
I can’t believe that they thought Summon Natural Ally was a good idea. Putting Instinctive Effect on every one of the allies means that I will rarely, if ever, have to command it. Grats on breaking economy of action. Players are going to complain that they can’t get just any natural beast. Why couldn’t they have created a specific keyword for these? Ugh.
Witch (Wizard): Augury? Really?
Have to have a familiar. I’m okay with that. The 4e familiar rules are solid.
Hmmm. Witch Bolt. Not having to roll to hit (after the first time) is sexy. Bet I could build something that breaks this. Maybe a Monk/Wizard hybrid.
I’m not strong enough to wade through all those spells right now.
Themes: Too many summoned/controlled creatures.
Paragon Paths: They’re all Essentials builds for the classes in this book. Only time will tell if any of them become popular.
Shiradi Champion: Kind of cool. Weird to take yourself out of combat.
Wild Hunter: Strike of the Hunter makes me want to set up a party to power up a Rogue with this ability.
Witch Queen: Nothing exciting.
Familiars: I like the Coure Attendant.
Magic Items: Why do they make magic items like Reclaimer’s Totem? Do they honestly think anyone likes them?
Faerie Field Catalog? Really?
Unseelie Candle is perfect.
I liked most of the alternative rewards.
Done for now, Big Bang Theory calls.
