While this encounter has a lower budget than 1.04 – Into the Hornet’s Nest, the mechanics of Two-Weapon Rend provide a similar, if not more dangerous, gotcha. As party size increases, so does your opportunity to focus fire one of the PCs.
This is another encounter to just relax and have fun with.
My players were highly motivated to kill Kennat by this point. Being trapped on the bridge with artillery overlooking them made them very scared of this fight, so they decided to blitz the enemy backfield. It worked fairly well for them, but they were definitely hurt at the end.
As much as I hate filler encounters, 1.11 was written when I was first experimenting with EXP for a full 30-level campaign. It wasn’t until later that I realized that the true effect of this fight was to punish people for metagaming 1.10.
Yes, I know that the skill challenge is copied from 1.01. I’ve tried to find the original file so that you can see what I originally wrote, but it seems to have been eaten by grumpkins. In retrospect, the two skill challenges in this level were far too similar in mechanics and I wish I had done something different with this one.
