I’ve run this encounter three times now, with mostly positive results. It’s the hardest encounter of level one (there are no level+3 encounters until later, so as to give people an opportunity to get used to the new system, to mesh as a party and to learn the setting). I’ve found that there’s a certain amount of perverse reverse psychology to this fight, as the louder you say, “ambush them and stay away from the hole”, the more someone wants to poke their head in the hole.
Every single group has decided to help Delensay. They also all expressed confusion that they couldn’t just buy food and supplies in Ostlea Hollow.
This encounter never fails to get people laughing. The trick is allowing yourself to have a Beavis and Butthead moment as a GM, going all-in with the toilet humor.
My players did not have that much trouble with this encounter, but other GMs that have run it say that it hits harder than I give it credit for. It also includes the Leaping Flame mechanic, which I think is fun.
